Nature-based Solutions for Sustainable Urban Water Management

On April 15, 2025, the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City’s Institute for Sustainable Finance and the Asian Institute of Technology co-organized a workshop on Nature-based Solutions for Sustainable Urban Water Management in Can Tho City.

Experts, including Dr. Le Anh Tuan from Can Tho University, proposed several strategies to enhance water resilience and sustainability in the Mekong Delta city.
These include:

  • Collecting and reusing treated wastewater and rainwater for irrigation, street cleaning, and firefighting.

  • Artificial groundwater recharge during the rainy season and expanding water supply networks to coastal areas in the dry season.

  • Increasing green spaces along urban roads and improving lakes and canals (e.g., Bung Xang, Xang Thoi) for better water storage and urban cooling.

The research team is also developing a framework for urban water security assessment and testing circular wastewater treatment models to support sustainable urban growth.
